Frequently Asked Questions
What is kratom?
Kratom (Mitragyna speciosa) is a tropical tree native to Southeast Asia. Its leaves contain alkaloids — primarily mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine — that interact with opioid and related receptor systems.
Is kratom legal?
Kratom is legal at the U.S. federal level but regulated or banned in some states and localities. Check our legality hub for a state-by-state overview.
What are kratom strains?
Strain names usually combine vein color (red, green, white, gold) and commercial/regional labels (Bali, Maeng Da, Borneo). They are marketing categories more than strict botanical classes.
How much kratom should I take?
There is no FDA-approved dosage. Many beginners start around 1–2 grams of powder and adjust slowly. Extract dosing differs from powder — use a scale and read our dosage guide.
Does kratom show up on drug tests?
Standard 5-, 7-, 10-, or 12-panel workplace tests typically do not screen for kratom alkaloids. Specialized tests exist but are less common.
